Ron Paul Forced To Pull Anti-Israel Amendment

Just at a time when the Middle East is in turmoil and increasing provocations are coming from Iran, Ron Paul spitefully attempts to pull the rug out from under Israel when the country is at its most vulnerable. However, his efforts have been thwarted, as he has been pressured to pull back his amendment which would have eliminated Israel’s $3 billion security assistance. This is in large part due to the efforts of Pastor Hagee. Why out of all the money we provide to other countries, including unstable ones like Pakistan and Egypt, has Paul chosen to single out Israel to cut funds from?

Pam Geller, Atlas Shrugs:

Atlas readers, u da best! Thank you for writing. Yesterday, Ron Paul to Israel: Drop Dead but righteous Christians and Jews and freedom lovers fought back.

This just in from Pastor Hagee (love that man):

We are very happy to report that Rep. Paul no longer intends to offer his amendment! While we do not claim to understand the workings of Ron Paul’s mind, we do know that the thousands of e-mails we sent to Capitol Hill have spoken loudly and clearly. Those who seek to rupture the U.S.- Israel relationship now know that they will face the determined opposition of America’s vast Christian community. It is now clearer than ever that the great American heartland stands with Israel!

If you’ve already e-mailed your Congressman, thank you. You have made an important statement at a critical time. If you have not yet e-mailed your Congressman, we still encourage you to do so. The Paul family has certainly not abandoned its dream of ending our support for Israel. It is crucial that your Congressman understand just how strongly you would oppose such a move.

If you think it is a good thing for Israel to be beholden to America you are terribly wrong. The US should not give Israel any money so Israel does not have to look over her shoulder CONSTANTLY! to see if the US approves of Israel defending herself, if it's okay to build, if it's okay to live as Jews. It's ridiculous. America is no longer a friend of Israel no matter what the citizens think or feel. When the government turns its back on Israel as the US President has done - it is no longer an ally. If you love Israel then you want her independent.

I'm in favor of revoking Israel's US aid.

Any one who still supports Israel's being dependent on America is NO friend of the Jewish State.

I normally agree with you but you are dead wrong on this one. The US government is no friend of Israel and you of all people should have welcomed this amendment.

I understand the points both of you make. Perhaps in the long term it would be preferable if Israel weens itself off of American military aid. But this amendment would have removed the aid in one lump sum all at once and cut Israel off at the knees at a crucial time.

LEL, with this aid, Israel is basically paying to upgrade and modernize the Egyptian army with American weapons.

The aid has had two corrosive effects: its made Israel excessively deferential to America at a time when Israel needs to rely only on itself and it has kept Israel from building for example, its own fighter plane it could build for fraction of the cost of the F-35s it is buying from America.

And Israel is now a wealthy country with a strong economy. The difference between the 1980s and the present period is vast and profound. The aid is also a favorite weapon of anti-Israel critics. The Israeli government should announce its intention to relinquish the aid in one to years' time and use that time to prepare for the day the country is finally independent.

An independent and secure Israel should be in the interests of every one who cares for and supports the Jewish State. Its a move that's long overdue.

I have lived in Israel and witnessed first hand how Israel repeatedly abandons her own vital interests to appease the "international community" including the U.S. If Israel had a proper political system where the Knesset and PM were elected by geographically based districts the suicidal policy of trading land for a non-exsistant peace would probably end up in the dust bin of history. Foreign aid does create a dependency, just as any welfare system does, and should be phased out at the same time as it is phased out to Arab (and all other) countries. The U.S. needs to stop pressuring Israel and Israel needs the ability to stand up to pressure that is a threat to her strategic interests. Only political reform will allow Israel to continue to develop properly and remain free and strong.
